The Wayans family inducted into the NAACP Awards’ Hall of Fame

The Wayans family, who have made a huge impact on Hollywood through comedy in film, TV, sketch shows, and stand-up, were honored at this year’s NAACP Image Awards.

Keenen Ivory Wayans, Damon Wayans Sr., Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Kim Wayans, and Damon Wayans Jr. all received recognition for their work.

Marlon, who was nominated for his guest role on Bel-Air on Peacock, shared how his older brother Keenen played a key role in their success. “He raised us all like Jedis,” Marlon said. “We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for our big brother.”

He also joked about their mom’s reaction when Keenen told her he was leaving college for comedy. “Boy, I’ve known you your whole life, and you ain’t never said nothing funny. That’s the funniest thing you’ve said,” Marlon recalled, sparking laughter from the crowd. It was the perfect moment for a family that’s been making people laugh for over 30 years.

The Wayans family’s career credits are impressive. Keenen created In Living Color in 1990 and directed Scary Movie in 2000, which was written by Marlon and Shawn. They also wrote and starred in White Chicks in 2004. Damon Wayans Sr. starred in the 1995 comedy Major Payne and is currently co-starring with his son, Damon Wayans Jr., in the CBS sitcom Poppa’s House, which was also nominated for an NAACP award. Both Damons were recognized for their acting on the show.

Damon Jr. has earned praise for his roles in the critically acclaimed comedies Happy Endings and New Girl. Kim Wayans, who is known for her work as a comedian, actor, and director, was also celebrated for her role in the 2011 drama Pariah.
