Steve Gary Jones Jr., a former African American CIA employee from Maryland, is making headlines with his explosive new tell-all memoir Closed Letter: Racism in the CIA, where he details his controversial firing from the agency. Along with the book, he’s also released a rap song called “Closed Letter,” available on all major streaming platforms. But this isn’t just a creative side project—it’s an intense exposé about systemic racism within one of the country’s most secretive organizations. Now, Jones is setting his sights on turning the story into a major movie or TV series.
A Baltimore native and a graduate of Johns Hopkins University’s Carey Business School, Jones served in the CIA’s Security Protective Service for over a decade. In January 2013, he filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) alleging discrimination and racial injustice. After a year of no action, he recorded a rap song highlighting the racism he encountered while working at the CIA. As soon as the agency’s Office of Public Affairs caught wind of the song, Jones was put on nine months of administrative leave and was eventually terminated in February 2014 by a board of his peers.
Although the song came a year after his EEOC complaint, the two issues were treated separately. Jones fought back through legal appeals, but his case was dismissed, with his original concerns never addressed. His case is now officially documented in Westlaw, and had he not been fired, he would have qualified for a 20-year retirement in 2023.
Jones, who had a side career as a comedian, gained popularity online between 2010 and 2015 with viral sketches, commercials, and stand-up clips on World Star Hip Hop. While working at the CIA, he also entertained millions under his artistic alter ego, Stevieweevie. In 2024, Jones moved to Dubai for nearly a year, where he wrote his memoir, which was officially published on September 25, 2024.
“I was ignored like most Black people in the workplace,” says Jones. “Now, my goal is to turn this untold, extraordinary hip-hop-meets-intelligence story into something that can’t be silenced—a film or TV series that speaks truth to power.”
You can grab his book on Amazon, and check out the song on Spotify and Apple Music.
