Grammy-nominated soulful singer-songwriter Angie Stone has tragically passed away at the age of 63, reportedly following a car crash, according to TMZ. The celebrity news outlet confirmed her death with her publicist, Deborah Champagne.
Stone was leaving a performance in Montgomery, Alabama, early Saturday morning when the fatal crash occurred. Details about the incident are still limited at this time.
Stone’s career spanned decades, with her first major break coming in the late ’70s as part of the all-female hip-hop group The Sequence, signed to Sugar Hill Records. She later joined the R&B trio Vertical Hold in the early ’90s. But it was her solo career that truly solidified her place in R&B. Her debut album, Black Diamond, came out in 1999 on Arista Records and was certified gold. It featured the hit “No More Rain (“In This Cloud”),” which sampled Gladys Knight & the Pips’ “Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye).”
Stone’s 2001 album, Mahogany Soul, under J Records, was also critically acclaimed, with popular tracks like “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” and “Brotha.”
She’ll be remembered for her deep influence on R&B and soulful music, leaving behind a lasting legacy.
