The Aaliyah Barbie doll, released on what would have been the late singer’s 46th birthday, quickly sold out on launch day, making it clear how much fans still adore the “Princess of R&B.” This collectible, part of Barbie’s Music Series, pays tribute to Aaliyah’s unforgettable impact on both music and style.
“Today, on Aaliyah’s birthday, Barbie honors the Princess of R&B’s unmatched legacy as a once-in-a-generation talent. A rising star who left an unforgettable mark on pop culture, the Aaliyah Barbie doll celebrates her iconic style, keeping her influence alive across generations,” Barbie’s official Instagram post shared.
Inspired by Aaliyah’s look in the “One in a Million” music video, the doll features a sleeveless faux leather vest, a black crop top, silver-studded pants, and Aaliyah’s signature black aviator sunglasses. According to NBC News, it’s a pretty spot-on homage to her iconic style.
Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton, worked closely with Mattel on the doll and praised its edgy design, reflecting his sister’s love for all-black outfits. He said he was “blown away” by how well the doll captured Aaliyah’s confidence and empowerment. “It’s still tight-fitting; it’s still a little bit sexy. But it’s pants, so it brings that power and confidence and expression,” Haughton said. “It really just checked all the boxes of what my sister represents and also what Barbie represents—empowerment and expression.”
The doll was initially priced at $55 for Barbie Club 59 members, and will be available at Target for $55.99 starting January 26, giving fans another shot at grabbing one. Aaliyah joins musical legends like Gloria Estefan, Tina Turner, and Stevie Nicks in the Barbie Music Series.
Aaliyah, who gave us timeless hits like “Are You That Somebody” and “Try Again,” left an undeniable mark on the music world before her tragic death at 22 in a 2001 plane crash. Her 1996 album One in a Million went double platinum in less than a year, and she earned multiple Grammy nominations.
Mattel’s tribute to Aaliyah captures her incredible legacy: “Aaliyah’s smooth vocals and innovative sound helped shape ’90s R&B, and her influence on music and fashion continues to be felt today. Our tribute to ‘Babygirl’s’ life and sound will take any collection to the top of the charts.”
