9-year-old receives award for building hand-washing machine

A 9-year-old boy identified as Stephen Wamukota, who hails from Bungoma County in Western Kenya, is doing the “little” he can to help his community in these trying times. CNN reports.

In light of this pandemic, we are all looking for a way forward to curb the spread of coronavirus. 9-year-old Kenyan is doing more than just thinking; he’s doing something – He built a hand-washing machine for his local community. The 9-year-old built a semi-automatic handwashing machine from wood, nails, and a small water tank. The machine reduces the possibility of contracting coronavirus as users can wash their hands without touching surfaces with their hands.

Stephen’s father, in an interview, said his son came up with the idea to build the machine after watching some local TV channel videos on how to stay safe during these times. “The first time the president announced Covid-19 infection in our country, it was said that everyone should wash their hands regularly to prevent the virus. My son told me that time that he had come up with a structure to help make handwashing easier,” James, the father of the 9-year-old said.

9-year-old receives award

Gaining a lot of attention for this gift to the community, he received an award from the Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta. Stephen was among the 68 people who have received an award from President Uhuru Kenyatta. In addition to the presidential award, the governor of Bungoma County has promised the 9-year-old a scholarship to complete his primary and secondary school.
