With March Madness just around the corner, USC star JuJu Watkins has been laser-focused on the game—so much so that she hasn’t had time to take up Caitlin Clark on her offer for some pre-tournament advice.
Clark, the college basketball legend turned WNBA rookie, recently reached out, offering to help Watkins navigate her growing success. USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb shared the news on a podcast, revealing that Clark was happy to be a mentor if Watkins ever wanted guidance.
Watkins, a 19-year-old sophomore, told People she hasn’t had a chance to follow up yet, but she appreciates the support.
“I haven’t yet reached out,” Watkins admitted. “But just to know that I have that support—it means a lot.”
And it’s not for lack of interest. Watkins has had her hands full, making history by surpassing Clark’s record for most points scored in a player’s first two college seasons. On top of that, she’s balancing school, life, and major brand deals with Nike, NYX Cosmetics, and Degree deodorant.
While USC didn’t take down their rivals, UCLA, in the Pac-12 championship, the Trojans are still expected to be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament, which kicks off Wednesday, March 19. They’re even among the favorites to win it all.
Despite all the comparisons, Watkins has nothing but respect for Clark.
“I’m a big fan,” she told People, adding that Clark has been “killing it” in her first season with the Indiana Fever. “I’m always proud and cheering her on.”
As for the advice? Watkins says she’ll reach out when the time is right. But for now, her focus is on one thing: her team.
“They definitely come first,” she said. “Everything else is after.”
