Gilbert Arenas has apologized to actress Lupita Nyong’o for the derogatory and insensitive colorist remarks he made about her beauty.
The 38-year old former professional basketball player was one of the strongest trash-talkers in the NBA during his active days. After he retired from the game, he continued his practices, mostly calling out people on social media and his podcast whenever he had the chance.
In 2017, the athlete claimed that very few dark-skinned women are beautiful and specifically addressed Nyong’o, pointing out that she was not ‘cute.’ The Washington Wizards icon is one of the most savage people on Instagram, always taking shots at people whether he’s joking or not. The most recent case of Arenas doing so involves Kenyan-Mexican actress Lupita Nyong’o. He attacked the lady, but he knew he was wrong and apologized to the Hollywood figure.
He sent a message showing his love and respect to Nyong’o, explaining that idiotic bahavior always stands in the way for the black community to come together. He recognized he was wrong with his behavior, took to Instagram and sent a message to the ‘Star Wars’, ‘12 Years a Slave’ and ‘Black Panther’ Star.
It’s quite nuaseating how people of the same race can sometimes be racists to their own people and it is a matter deep rooted in colorism. Lupita Nyong’o has been outspoken on colorism among black people and how it divides people of their own kind.
Despite his apology on Instagram, people are still calling Gilbert a clown for his comments. They point out that his children are dark-skinned and there was no place for him to make such a comment. Even though it happened years ago, people have not forgotten.
“We can’t come together as a race until the idiots of the race (right their wrongs),” wrote the basketball star. His post included a picture of the 37-year-old actress.
“My name is Gilbert and I was an IDIOT for attacking one of our queens for no reason,” added Arenas. “@lupitanyongo I’m truly sorry for my coon behavior.”
Do you accept his apology or should he be held accountable for what was said about Lupita?
