A college student in Louisiana tragically passed away after participating in an off-campus hazing ritual. Caleb Wilson, a 20-year-old mechanical engineering student at Southern University and a pledge of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., was pronounced dead on Thursday, Feb. 27, around 3:15 a.m. at Baton Rouge General Hospital.
The Baton Rouge Police said Wilson was taking part in an initiation ritual at North Sherwood Forest Community Park with other members of Omega Psi Phi when he collapsed while standing in line. His friends rushed him to the hospital, but sadly, he passed away. An autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death.
In light of the ongoing investigation, student organizations at Southern University have paused all membership activities.
Southern University’s Chancellor, John K. Pierre, shared the sad news on the school’s Facebook page, saying, “It is with profound sadness that I share the devastating news of the passing of one of our students, Caleb Wilson.” He went on to mention that Caleb was also a dedicated member of the Southern University “Human Jukebox” Marching Band and expressed sympathy for Caleb’s family, friends, and classmates.
“An off-campus incident is believed to have contributed to Caleb’s death,” the chancellor added, confirming that the university is fully cooperating with the Baton Rouge Police, who are leading the investigation. He also mentioned that counseling services would be available to the university community during this difficult time.
The Southern University Marching Band also honored Caleb on Facebook, remembering him as a talented trumpet player, dedicated student, and a bright, positive person who made a lasting impact. “His energy, spirit, and impact on those around him will never be forgotten,” the band’s post read.
Caleb’s death has left the university community heartbroken, and he is being remembered fondly by those who knew him.
Omega Psi Phi, a prominent Black fraternity founded at Howard University in 1911, counts many notable figures like Jessie Jackson, Shaquille O’Neal, and Steve Harvey among its members.
