Louisiana’s Attorney General, Liz Murrill, is threatening legal action against rapper Boosie Badazz over a promotional poster that featured the name and photo of Caleb Wilson, a 20-year-old Southern University student who tragically passed away due to an alleged hazing incident while pledging for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Three individuals have been charged in connection with Wilson’s death.
Boosie, after reportedly speaking with Caleb’s father, decided to create a scholarship in Caleb’s name and promoted it through a flyer. He announced the scholarship at his annual Boosie Bash, a music festival hosted at Southern University. Murrill, however, claims that while Caleb’s family knew about the scholarship, they were not aware that Boosie would be using his image and name on a poster for the event.
Murrill expressed her frustration saying, “All of this came together really quickly, and it looks like the promoters saw an opportunity to profit off a family’s unimaginable loss. It’s disgusting. They owe the family an apology.” She also questioned the transparency of the scholarship, adding, “Nobody has made any effort to put money in the scholarship fund; Boosie hasn’t even funded any of it.”
It’s unclear if any money has been contributed to the scholarship fund as of now.
Boosie, however, is defending his actions, claiming he never intended to exploit Caleb’s death for promotion. He says the event had been planned since late 2024, long before Caleb’s passing. He also felt betrayed by the legal threat, especially since he believes he was trying to help.
On his X account, Boosie shared his perspective on the situation, saying:
“ITS SAD FOR THIS LAWYERn FAMILY TO SAY I PROMOTED MY EVENT OFF SOMEONES PASSING. MY EVENT WAS PROMOTED ON EVENTBRITE SINCE NOV 14. THIS INCIDENT HAPPENED A WEEK BEFORE MY EVENT WAS TO TAKE PLACE! HOW THE F— CAN I CAPITALIZE OFF SOMEONE DEATH FOR A CONCERT. THAT AINT ME. A DEATH OF A STUDENT WONT HELP A CONCERT IT WOULD HURT A CONCERT! I WAS ASKED TO HELP THE SITUATION N THATS WHAT I WAS DOING ONCE I MADE IT HOME. BUT FOR YALL TO SAY THAT YALL ARE TAKING LEGAL ACTION AGAINST SOMEONE WHO IS TRYING TO HELP YALL IS A SLAP N MY FACE N COMPLETELY WRONG! WHEN KEEPING IT REAL GOES WRONG SMH BR IM DONE. ANOTHER MONEY GRAB! THIS IS THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL SMH.”
He also urged Caleb’s family and Attorney General Murrill to get in touch with him, claiming he’s been trying to help the family financially ever since hearing the news.
