Civil rights activist Dr. Hazel Dukes dies at 92

Dr. Hazel Nell Dukes, a trailblazing civil rights activist and respected leader, passed away on March 1 at the age of 92. Born in Montgomery, Alabama, in the heart of the segregated South, Dr. Dukes became a beloved icon in New York City and across activist communities. She made history as the former national president of the NAACP and the president of its New York chapter.

Her experiences growing up in the segregated South shaped her unwavering commitment to social justice and equality.

Dr. Dukes’ passing has left many political leaders grieving, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who shared a heartfelt message: “I’m saddened to hear of the passing of my true friend, sister, and friend for more than 40 years, Hazel Dukes… She made a difference, and we will forever be indebted to her. I spoke to her by phone just two days ago. We will never have another Hazel Dukes, but I am grateful that we had this one.”

Rev. Al Sharpton also honored her legacy, saying, “She made a difference, and we will forever be indebted to her.”

Even as recently as this year, Dr. Dukes remained an active voice at press conferences, speaking her mind and continuing to inspire others. She was also the godmother of activist and author Tamika Mallory.

Dr. Dukes was deeply involved with numerous civic and social organizations, including the Metro-Manhattan Chapter of The Links, Inc. (where she was a former chapter president), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the National Council of Negro Women, Inc.

In 2023, she made history as the first layperson in the country to administer the oath of office to a governor, when she swore in Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Dr. Dukes once said, “If I can help somebody as I pass along; then my living shall not have been in vain.” Her life and legacy continue to inspire and influence countless people.
