A 24-year-old African American pilot, known by his rap names “Young Mula” and “Muleazy,” is making waves on TikTok after sharing a video of himself celebrating a successful flight landing. But instead of being praised, some critics are attacking his appearance, questioning his professionalism because of his locs and grill. Despite the negativity, many others are defending him, pointing out that skills should matter more than looks.
Young Mula, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, posted the video of himself walking through an airport in his pilot uniform, saying, “Another successful flight, glory be to God. In this career, you gotta be cautious, but most of all, you gotta stay prayed up.” The video quickly went viral, racking up over 1.4 million views and 268,000 likes, with many people celebrating his accomplishments. One commenter wrote, “Protect this young man at all costs!!! This is what some don’t want to see. Congrats to you sir!!!” Another fan commented on his unique look, saying, “Why are there no other pilots that look like you!! I love it!!! Be blessed.”
However, when the video made its way to X (formerly Twitter), racist comments started popping up. Some critics questioned his professionalism, saying things like, “I’m sorry but it’s all about professionalism and appearance in a job like this. You’re literally holding the lives of others in your hands.” Others even commented on his faith, suggesting, “Yea, I prefer my pilots not let ‘god’ be the reason we land safely. Spend less time ‘praying up’ and more time training.”
Despite the backlash, many people rushed to defend the young pilot. One person asked, “Who said dreads and grills affect your ability to fly a plane? Who defines professionalism?”
In the end, it seems like people are more focused on his skills as a pilot and less concerned with how he looks.
