Former Nurse Charged With Abusing Black Babies Released on $20K Bond

Erin Strotman, a former NICU nurse from Richmond, Virginia, is facing serious charges of malicious wounding and child abuse after allegedly causing bruises and fractures to babies under her care at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. Several of the babies involved were African American, and Strotman is the sole suspect in an investigation looking into these injuries from 2023 to 2024.

Even with the allegations, Strotman was granted a $25,000 bond after a judge determined she didn’t pose a flight risk or danger to herself. This decision has sparked anger among the families of the affected babies.

“I think we share the same feeling of anger,” said Dominique Hackey, whose baby was injured in the NICU in 2023. “This is something we were prepared for, but honestly, we didn’t expect it.”

As part of her bond conditions, Strotman has been placed under house arrest at her parents’ home. She is not allowed to be around children or vulnerable adults, and she’s banned from working in healthcare. Her parents must also remove all firearms from their home.

The court has sealed details of her mental health evaluation and text messages with her boyfriend. Strotman’s preliminary court hearing is set for May.
