Oklahoma State Senator Regina Goodwin got into a tense exchange with a Tulsa County sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop on January 11th, which ended with her being handcuffed after she repeatedly refused to show her driver’s license.
The incident started when Deputy Freddie Alaniz pulled Goodwin over for allegedly running two stop signs. Bodycam footage from the stop shows Goodwin arguing with Alaniz, accusing him of escalating the situation. Despite her claim that she didn’t refuse to show her license, Alaniz maintained that he asked her multiple times.
“There was no refusal of me to give you my driver’s license,” Goodwin said.
“I asked you over five times to give me your driver’s license, and you kept debating it,” Alaniz replied.
Things quickly escalated, and Goodwin was eventually handcuffed, detained, and placed in the patrol car. Her attorney, Mike Manning, who was present, tried to intervene, suggesting that the officer could just issue a citation instead. Alaniz agreed to the citation but still insisted that Goodwin’s behavior justified the strong response.
During a call with his supervisor, Alaniz explained that Goodwin had been speeding, ran two stop signs, and became confrontational during the stop.
Goodwin was released at the scene with a citation for failing to stop at a stop sign. She’s scheduled to appear in court on February 25 unless she pays the fine before then.
