Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King took the top spot at the North American box office over the first weekend of 2025, raking in $23.8 million in its third weekend, according to studio estimates on Sunday. It edged out Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which had dominated the previous two weekends, but still held strong with $21.2 million for the weekend.
With this latest haul, Sonic 3 now has a total of $187.5 million in domestic earnings, helping the franchise cross the $1 billion mark worldwide. Mufasa, though not far behind, has earned $169.2 million so far.
In third place, Focus Features’ Nosferatu remake proved its staying power, with a solid $13.2 million in ticket sales, dropping only 39% in its second weekend—a rare feat for horror films. This brings its total to $69.4 million since it debuted at Christmas, already surpassing its $50 million production budget (not including marketing costs).
With no major new releases, the rest of the top 10 was filled with holdovers. Moana 2 claimed the No. 4 spot in its sixth weekend, earning another $12.4 million. It’s now just shy of hitting $1 billion globally, with a total of $960.5 million.
